Dr. Baron received his Medical degree at the University of Florida in Gainesville in 1986.  He completed his Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology training at the University of Alabama in Birmingham during which he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, followed by Gastroenterology fellowship training at the same institution. He then completed a year of advanced pancreaticobiliary endoscopy training at Duke University Medical Center under the direction of Dr. Peter Cotton.  Dr. Baron served on the faculty at the University of Alabama in Birmingham of Medicine from 1993-1998 where he was promoted to Associate Professor of Medicine and served as the Director of Therapeutic Endoscopy.  From 1998 through 2013 he served on staff at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota as Professor of Medicine and Director of Pancreaticobiliary Endoscopy, where he was awarded the Mayo Clinic distinguished clinician Henry S. Plummer award.  He is currently Professor of Medicine and Director of Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy at The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Dr. Baron is nationally and internationally recognized for his skills in advanced therapeutic endoscopy. He is an active member of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), is past president of the Society of Gastrointestinal Intervention (SGI) and has published in numerous peer-reviewed journals including four review articles in the New England Journal of Medicine. In addition, he is co-editor of the textbooks ERCP (Elsevier) and Self-Expandable Stents in the Gastrointestinal Tract (Springer).
