Advanced Surgical Options
NorthShore Cardiovascular Institute’s Cardiovascular Surgery team offers a full range of the latest minimally invasive techniques and innovative procedures. Our highly experienced, fellowship-trained surgeons perform the most advanced and pioneering procedures, ensuring optimal patient outcomes.
Division Head Hyde M. Russell, MD, the Owen L. Coon Chair of Cardiothoracic Surgery leads a team of experts including Jonathan Somers, MD, and Eugene Fernandes, MD. In addition to academic roles at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, our physicians have taught and presented at high caliber institutions including Mayo Clinic.
Unparalleled Expertise in Atrial Fibrillation Treatment
In collaboration with our colleagues in electrophysiology, we offer a full range of therapies to treat Atrial Fibrillation (Afib) from catheter ablations to surgery and a sophisticated hybrid ablation, not currently offered anywhere else.
Outcomes for our minimally invasive MAZE surgical procedure approach a 90 percent success rate in curing A-fib. Our hybrid surgical ablation approach utilizes the latest innovations in simultaneous mapping and endocardio ablation and is delivering higher success rates than the more traditional hybrid ablation procedures.
National Leaders in Bypass and Valve Replacement
NorthShore’s cardiovascular surgery team earned a top composite 3 Star rating from the prestigious Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) for the second consecutive year for coronary artery bypass (CAB) procedures and for aortic valve replacement (AVR) plus CAB procedures. Only about five percent of programs in the country earn this superior recognition for high quality.
Our continued partnership with NorthShore’s leading interventional cardiologists ensures the best options for aortic and mitral valve replacement. Known for groundbreaking, minimally-invasive catheter-based techniques, NorthShore was the first medical center in the country to pioneer minimally-invasive mitral valve repair and remains a referral center for mitral valve disease treatment.
Innovations in Heart Failure Treatment
Our Joint Commission-certified left ventricular assist device (LVAD) program can be life-saving for patients who have exhausted other conventional heart failure interventions including stents, pacemakers and open heart surgery. The mechanical pump is implanted in patients with near end-stage heart failure, attached to the heart’s left ventricle and powered by an external battery pack. LVAD can also serve as a bridge to heart transplantation.
Transcatheter aortic valve replacement, (TAVR), a non-surgical, catheter-based, treatment for patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis who are either high risk for or too sick for traditional heart valve repair surgery is another innovative option for heart failure patients. The minimally invasive treatment inserts a new valve inside the diseased aortic valve. The TAVR procedure is performed in a specialized operating room with cutting edge imaging capabilities.
New Center of Excellence
NorthShore is launching a comprehensive program for treatment of thoracic aortic aneurysms and dissections in 2019, bringing together collaborative expertise in cardiac and vascular surgery and specially-trained nurses and allied clinicians.
NorthShore cardiovascular surgeons see patients in Evanston, Skokie and Bannockburn, and perform surgery in both Evanston and Highland Park Hospitals.
