Increasing incidence of melanoma among middle-aged adults

Jerry D. Brewer, M.D., M.S., a dermatologic surgeon at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, discusses his article appearing in the January 2014 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, which noted increased survival rates in conjunction with a 24-fold increase in women and a 4.5-fold increase in men for incidences of melanoma, in Olmsted County, Minnesota, demonstrating early-diagnosis effectiveness and perhaps a correlation to the disease in decreased age-related hormone levels in women. People are encouraged to do regular self-skin exams.
