Bruce D. Gelb, MD, hosts a panel of Mount Sinai pediatric specialists who discuss what we’ve learned about treating children with COVID-19. George Ofori-Amanfo, MD, was redeployed to treat adults during the first wave, and about a month later, he started seeing the first pediatric cases. These patients, ranging from 1 to 14 years of age, had underlying conditions, such as asthma, heart disease, cancer, or diabetes. All responded to treatment, though many required oxygen support. Karen M. Wilson, MD, MPH, discusses how treatment evolved as the team learned more about the disease. She describes how a small number presented with an acute inflammatory response when the virus targets multiple organs throughout the body, known as multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). Dusan Bogunovic, PhD, describes how MIS-C occurs four to five weeks after the initial infection, and compares its symptoms and trajectory to those of Kawasaki disease. He also provides an overview of the research conducted at Mount Sinai, as well as vaccines in development around the world. The panel discusses what parents should know about COVID-19, when their child should be tested, and when to seek treatment. The experts also discuss best practices for schools as children potentially go back to school, including lessons learned from Europe. They also stress that each family has individual concerns and needs, and will need to weigh all the factors—including their child’s development—in making the best decision for them.
