Neurosurgeon William A. Vandergrift, M.D., a member of the epilepsy care team at the MUSC Health Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, offers laser ablation as an alternative to resective surgery for select patients with temporal lobe epilepsy. Epileptic seizures can be mitigated in some patients by carefully identifying the area of the brain in which the seizure begins and removing brain tissue in that area via surgical resection. Laser ablation, in which a laser is inserted through a screw fitted in a very small hole in the skull and guided to the appropriate area of the brain, offers a minimally invasive alternative to resective surgery for some patients with temporal lobe epilepsy.
