Described as an otherwise normal C-section, Benjamin Goebrecht’s birth was truly extraordinary: His mother was born without a uterus.
Jennifer Gobrecht, 33, was the first patient to receive a uterus transplant in the Uterus Transplantation for Uterine Factor Infertility (UNTIL) trial. In November 2019, she gave birth to her son at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
Benjamin Gobrecht’s birth in 2019 marked the 3rd infant delivery in the US by a woman with a transplanted uterus.
Enhanced by footage from the transplant surgery and birth, this video documents the experiences of the clinical team that treated Jennifer at Penn Medicine. Clinical commentary is included from OB/GYN and reproductive endocrinologist Dr. Kathleen O’Neill and transplant surgeon Paige Porrett, MD, who co-led a team comprised of 40+ specialists through Jennifer’s successful uterus transplant, IVF treatment, delivery and postpartum experience.
