Scott E. Grabill, D.O., Sentara Albemarle Hospital, discusses his area of focus, approach to patient care, and adult hip and knee reconstruction.
My name is Dr Scott Grable. I'm an orthopedic surgeon here in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. I work for Sentara orthopedic and sports medicine specialist. My primary focus in orthopedic surgery is adult hip and knee reconstruction. I enjoy taking care of patients who have either had injuries or arthritic conditions, uh, involving their knee or their hip and providing them both nonsurgical medical treatment options as well as surgical treatment options to fix their problem. Typically, a lot of what I do and specialize in is hip and knee replacement and different variations of hip and knee replacement. I can't pinpoint one exact moment, but generally I grew up in a house with both. My parents were teachers, so education was very important in the environment I grew up in, and I always from a very young age, had had a goal, uh, to become a physician on Then, as I got older, um, and it was in college. Probably at that time, I considered some other avenues, such as pharmacy or even research. Andi. I had an experience working for a pharmaceutical company, doing, uh, sort of laboratory research involving cartilage and arthritis, and that really fostered my interest in arthritis as a specialty. But I realized quickly that I did not like the science bench top. I really missed the involvement with people, and that solidified my decision toe, go to medical school, and then as I progressed through my medical career, I really just fell in love with orthopedic surgery. I think I was involved in athletics growing up, and there's sort of a natural connection with sports injuries, and that got me interested in orthopedics. And then the first time I scrubbed in the operating room for a knee replacement surgery, I was hooked. I knew that. That's what I was gonna going to spend the rest of my career doing, helping people overcome arthritis of the hip and knee. I started my career in the U. S. Navy after medical school. I served on active duty for 13 years, and that's where I began my medical training In my orthopedic surgery training E completed residency at Portsmouth Naval Medical Center up the road in Portsmouth, Virginia, and then after practicing North Peaks for a couple years, I went to the Cleveland Clinic and did a hip and knee reconstruction fellowship, and that's really where I develop my expertise An adult hip and knee Arthur plastic and replacement surgery. Um, and that is eventually what led me back to this area? My experience. Having lived in this region previously, I came to Sentara and specifically thio our practice here at Santerre Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Specialists, Um, really to build a joint replacement program. It's something that our community here in northeast North Carolina, um, was really lacking a core program that could take care of all kinds of issues with the hip and knee. Um, but to build a great joint replacement program and one that you know the community can be proud of. And can people in our community can get the care and surgical care for their hip and knee that they need right here close to home, I, like thio, approach each patient really as an individual. I think that's one of the things that kind of makes me stand out from, uh, some surgeons, um, in my field. I really try to get to know the patient. It's important, I think, the way that I can help them best surgically, with their hip and knee replacement eyes, to understand their goals and understand where they've been in the past and the problems that they specifically are affected by, because it's not the same for every patient. And then I really like to take that information and work with the patient and then use my expertise to help plan. Okay, what is the best specific procedure for that patient, and how should we go about that and then really taking it to the next step? It's all about getting them quickly through that process safely and so that they can get back to being active and doing the things that they want to do.
