A Cirrhotic Patient With Melena

In this presentation, Kimberly A. Forde, MD, places the case history of a 66-year-old patient with treatment-naive HCV-positive cirrhosis, ascites and melena (passed blood) within the context of the epidemiology and pathophysiology of acute and chronic variceal hemorrhage and portal hypertensive bleeding in the cirrhotic population. Dr. Forde’s discussion features relevant prophylactic and treatment measures (including transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunts, or TIPS and variceal ligation) as determined by AASLD Practice Guidelines, and a brief overview of gastric antral vascular ectasia (GAVE).
