Dr. Charney and Dr. Iacoviello have developed an app-based game to treat depression that targets the parts of the brain associated with emotional processing and cognitive control. Players are shown a human face and asked to identify which emotion is shown on the face; over time, this is intended to change the brain circuits associated with depression, significantly reducing symptoms. The concept shows a lot of promise—an early study showed that patients using the app had significantly fewer symptoms of major depressive disorder compared to a control group.
